When Tomlin, Parton, and Fonda, playing three fed-up office workers, kidnap their misogynist boss and take over, they implement progressive changes that turned out to be way ahead of the curve-so far ahead, in fact, that we’re still waiting to see some of them in real life. 9 to 5 as a comedy is farcical, loony, and downright slapstick-but its politics is serious. So it makes sense that “Radical!” is how my mom described seeing 9 to 5 in 1980, 11 years before Anita Hill testified in front of Congress, and 35 years before Sheryl Sandberg announced a $15 minimum wage for contractors at Facebook. The choice was, in her words, “60-hour workweeks with children or unemployment.” Though many thousands of women had entered the workforce, the law hadn’t caught up with them. At the time, there was no paid parental leave for pregnant women beyond a few weeks, no telecommuting or part-time work (not much has changed).
She was still there 10 years later, when she gave birth to my sister and me in 1990.
